Comic Con 2018 What You Need to Know

We all know that San Diego Comic Con is just around the corner, July 19th through July 22.  In just over a week, it will begin.  There are a few tips that we’ve gathered through the years that we’d like to share with everyone.

Pro-Tip, bring two back packs one with items you get from Comic Con, that one you drop off at your hotel or car, taking out the just what you’ll need. Then you have one to carry just the bare essentials, this one you will bring with you back to the convention center, and have room for more goodies..  Now what exactly should you have in your backpack at all times?  A refillable water bottle, a small med kit, with any medicines you require, lip balm, hand sanitizer, band-aids, and even a packet of moist towelettes will come in handy and fit in your zipper compartment.

Through the years I’ve found few things I bring from home can make life simpler from me, such as rubber bands for posters, zip lock sandwich bag, which will come in hand for all the small things you are given by vendors such as pins, coins etc.  That way you won’t have them floating around your bag.

While we are on the subject of sandwich bags, don’t forget snacks.  Protein bars, energy bars, and trail mix, are going to give you comfort while hanging out in a line.  Don’t forget to keep your energy up and hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

A couple items to keep in the back of your bag: bags and boards, people will give you comics whether you want the or not.  The comic con quick guide, this will be the smaller of the two guides you receive, and you’ll be able to reference quickly.  I suggest bringing a highlighter and a pen to make notes.  There is an app, but the wifi isn’t the best sometimes and while much of this information is on the app, you may not be able to access it.

Sharpies, a couple different colors.  I recommend, black, silver or gold.  That way when you meet your favorite artist you have one on hand to get that special item signed.

Charged battery packs,  and cell phone chargers should also be in your backpack, as they don’t let people sit on the ground and plug in like they used to, so bringing the best battery pack, charged, is highly recommended.

These are just a few things I’ve found that have made my life easier; simply by carrying them in my backpack.

A great pair of shoes is a must. At least 2 pair. While most will want to wear a brand new shoe, I recommend wearing a shoe that you have broken in and you are comfortable wearing.  However you can never go wrong buying an insole.

In case I haven’t mentioned it, deodorant is a must.  Frequent showers will make con pleasant for you and for everyone else with you, or, not with you.

Know before you go.  Take a good look at the convention hall map, as well as the Gaslamp area map, which is easily accessible on google maps.  Have an idea how far you are, and time it accordingly.  There will be a lot of people in town.  If your hotel is on a shuttle route, know the pick up spots, and times.

At some point you will want to eat.  Prepare to retreat back into the Gaslamp.  With the amount of people in town it won’t be so easy to grab food as you might think.  Hence, a protein bar here might be quite helpful.  If you want more than just the hot dogs and the usual unhealthy food, I suggest walking over to the Hilton or the Marriot Marquis.  They both have a quick grab and go area with healthier selections.

Other restaurants in the immediate area are Mary Janes at the Hard Rock Cafe.  They always have something fun going on.  Further into the Gaslamp  there is the Werewolf, bar and grill which have great sliders.   There are a lot of food trucks, some offering free food, but here is my famous bonus tip: the Ralphs grocery store, thats is hidden in the middle the Gaslamp, seems to be the geekiest grocery store ever.  They sell groceries and know things.  For the week they have all kinds of hot and cold items ready to go, and much cheaper than dining in the Gaslamp.

Be Kind.  Don’t forget to ask if you are a fan of a cosplayer, always ask if it is okay to take a picture.  They will usually always say yes, but in the off chance they say no, they probably just did a 5 hour shoot and will be grateful that you asked.

Be polite and try not drink too much.  Don’t waste your comic con and the people who are hanging out with you, by getting drunk most of the time.  It’s hot, it’s humid.  Don’t get sick,  stay hydrated and have fun.

In my opinion this is the funnest event of the year.  Anything you do will be the best thing you do all year.  Have a back up to your back up. Or go into the convention and see what happens, what you can discover.  At worst you’ll leave with great pictures and good friends.  Keep an eye out for each other and have a good con.

Wondercon 2017 is This Weekend

Wondercon 2017 begins tomorrow, Friday March 31 and continues to Sunday April 2nd.  This is a historic Wondercon for some due to the fact that it does not fall on Easter weekend.  It is being held at the Anaheim Convention center, which is directly across from Disneyland.

Wondercon is affiliated with the San Diego Comic Con.  Yes, it’s the same folks the put that wonderful show on that also put this show on, its just a smaller, but just as good.  Wondercon is host to nearly 59,000 people.

A bit of history about Wondercon.  The convention hasn’t always been in Anaheim.  Until 2012 it was in San Francisco, having Originated in Oakland CA.  A fun fact that I didn’t know until I read the information handed out today when I picked up my badge.

Wondercon has something for everyone.  There are are a multitude of vendors, nearly 1,000.  Comics from DC, Marvel, Image, Boom.  They have new and used comics and I usually find some stellar deals at some of the booths.

There is a lot of programming some of which includes Warner Bros, BBC, NBC and 20th Century Fox.  Just to name a few.  There is hundreds of hours of panels over the course of the 3 days.  It’s rather quite amazing how they put this show together so quickly.  I was there today, and honestly there really wasn’t much put together yet.  I’m sure the vendors are working late into the night to get ready for everyone tomorrow.

I will be updating through out the day, and in the evening after the day has come to a close.  Check my Facebook and Twitter for updates.

Batman v Superman Will Make You Form Your Own Opinion

It’s no secret, Batman v Superman has been one of the most anticipated films over the past year.  There has been so much talk about the how the film hasn’t delivered, frankly if I were to listen to all the reviews, I would never have seen the movie.  However, I have seen it, and I’ve seen it twice.

I’m not a die-hard fan who’s read every comic since I was a kid.  I don’t have a stash of the comics from back in the day.  I do have comics now, but I didn’t form my opinions of Superman, Batman or Wonder Woman as a child.  That may or may not make a difference in my opinion of this movie.

I absolutely loved this movie and found it to be very engaging.  I don’t know too much of the backstory of the characters but I do know enough to where I didn’t feel lost watching it.  I have seen the other movies that have come out.  Which do an okay job telling the story though they do leave out quite a bit, backstory plot wise.  This is where your friends who did read the comics or the DC wiki can come in quite handy.

First, I really thought Ben Affleck did a great job as Bruce Wayne and Batman.  He had “the look” that I just didn’t feel from Christian Bale.  Perhaps it’s because he’s older now, darker.  I also got a darker feel from Superman as well in this film.  For me, characters that have a darker side seem more appealing, more real.  I also can relate to Batman having lost his mother and how he promises to save Superman’s mother.  It was as if because he couldn’t save his own mother, he could some how take away some of the guilt by saving Martha.

Wonder Woman was just as appealing to me as Batman and Superman.  Though at this point, just based on the films I’ve seen in this series, there is very little known about her.  Her entrance into the battle was great, and the added surprise of Batman and Superman when she decides to intervene and help, was a great scene.

Throughout the film the score was a driving factor behind how I would react to what I was actually seeing.  It is definitely a soundtrack that I will pick up.

All in all I feel this was a great start to bringing together the Justice League.  I look forward to seeing the Wonder Woman stand alone, and hopefully a Ben Affleck Batman stand alone as well.

Batman v Superman Reaction

Today I went to see Batman v Superman and it exceeded every expectation that I had going in to it.  That is the one thing about reading early reviews, you can’t always believe someone else’s opinion on whether something is good or bad.

I for one  have an excellent opinion of Batman v Superman. Do keep in mind I am not a super fan of Batman or Superman, but this film had definitely turned my head.

Ben Affleck absolutely is Bruce Wayne.  From the looks, to the voice to his whole persona.  I think he embodied what it meant to be the batman and did it well.  This was a darker side of batman that we saw this time, and I loved it.

Superman is well, superman.  However there was a turning point where he realizes that he is living in a different world than his father and that things can’t always be the same.  At times you have to leave behind your clean cut actions in favor of some more sinister thought and actions.. It was at that moment that I knew he would become a character I would like.

Lex Luthor is the instigator in the film.  Pitting The Bat against Superman.  One of the most amazing fight scenes ensued,   It looked great on the camera..  Luther is a diabolic anti social twerp.  Smart lines were written for Jesse Eisenberg that for sure.

It’s once they realize that they need to come together to save Clarks mother.  Batman and Superman make an amazing team.  Especially when they add a one Diana Prince AKA Wonder Woman into the mix.

Wonder woman blew me away. Her power and her might along with her sexy elegance make her a deadly weapon.  Her outfit was great, and her fighting skills were amazing.  Fought like a true Amazon princess.

There is so much more to say about this film.  I am going to go see the film a few more times and hopefully will give  a much better detail of the film.

If you have time, check this out this weekend.

Batman v Superman is Nigh

In just a couple days we will be able to watch, I mean, indulge into the world of Superman v Batman.  This is a film I’ve personally been waiting quite some time for.  At first I was a bit apprehensive about having Ben Affleck as Batman, but that has now turned into a general excitement.  Ben really did grow on me, at least from the trailers.

The trailers have been giving us just enough to want to see the film even more than we even realize it.  My first realization of this was when Wonder Woman showed up with her shield and seemingly saved Batman and Superman unexpectedly.  That part was pretty awesome.

I look forward to seeing Jesse Eisenberg as Luther.  He has a speech pattern about how him that just portrays a good “bad” guy.  I’ve always felt that way about him.

This movie in my opinion is going to open my eyes to a world that I rarely look into.  I read comics yes, but I really haven’t been to into Batman or Superman.  Though I do find both characters being very interesting.

Batman comes out this Friday.  I will be watching it on Thursday.  Thoughts to come. Stay tuned.
