Solo a Star War Story

I saw Solo A Star Wars Story last night.  Now I went knowing that I do not like Han Solo.  I just don’t.  I prefer the complexity of the Darkside, but that’s just me.

However, immediately I was impressed with the Solo film.  No so much the actor, I mean its a hard thing to do to fill Harrison Fords shoes 40 years later.  I didn’t dislike him, but for me it was more about the story.  I love backstories.

It was interesting to find out how he actually got his last name.   Where the Solo of his name came from, yet they didn’t exactly say what his actual name was previously.  I could read books and scour the internet, but I’d rather it just be told in the film.  I think that is a big deal.

How he met Chewie.  That was not how I expected it, but it makes me feel better about their friendship.  They’ve been through a lot.  Woody Harrelson did a great job, it was a small role for him in my eyes, but it gave Han that push he needed to continue smuggling, the courage and confidence to do what has to be done.  In this film, Han did actually shoot first.

I was surprised about Qi’ra.  As I said Im all about the Dark Side.  What happened to her in those 3 years.  Is it just a survival thing?  I read the she was just made for this film so to look her up in books or other places, we just won’t find her history.   Part of me felt that she is the mother of Rey.  I’m fairly confident that Han is her father, but this would make her older than Kylo.  I’m not sure that would check out.   I would be on board with it his that was the case.  I don’t see much true Darkside for Kylo, I really don’t.  Just like in this movie, Qi’ra says to Han “your the good guy”.  Which combine that with Leia and I think we can see that Kylo is trying way to hard to be bad.

I do wish they would give us a comic, a book, something that explains what happens to Qi’ra.  Yes, Darth Maul was in it, but at the time of the prequels, she didn’t exist.  Maybe it’s Qi’ra and Paul Bettney’s character that could be Reys parents.

I must say the Solo film was way more than I expected, and I really liked it.  It gave us just enough taste of Hans past.  And lets not forget Lando.  Donald Glover did a wonderful job playing him.   Another set of shoes hard to fill, but he did a great job.  Even the star of the show, the Millennium Falcon was great.   I’m hoping the next Star Wars films continue on with the story give answers instead of creating more.

What are your thoughts on the Solo film?

Wondercon 2017 is This Weekend

Wondercon 2017 begins tomorrow, Friday March 31 and continues to Sunday April 2nd.  This is a historic Wondercon for some due to the fact that it does not fall on Easter weekend.  It is being held at the Anaheim Convention center, which is directly across from Disneyland.

Wondercon is affiliated with the San Diego Comic Con.  Yes, it’s the same folks the put that wonderful show on that also put this show on, its just a smaller, but just as good.  Wondercon is host to nearly 59,000 people.

A bit of history about Wondercon.  The convention hasn’t always been in Anaheim.  Until 2012 it was in San Francisco, having Originated in Oakland CA.  A fun fact that I didn’t know until I read the information handed out today when I picked up my badge.

Wondercon has something for everyone.  There are are a multitude of vendors, nearly 1,000.  Comics from DC, Marvel, Image, Boom.  They have new and used comics and I usually find some stellar deals at some of the booths.

There is a lot of programming some of which includes Warner Bros, BBC, NBC and 20th Century Fox.  Just to name a few.  There is hundreds of hours of panels over the course of the 3 days.  It’s rather quite amazing how they put this show together so quickly.  I was there today, and honestly there really wasn’t much put together yet.  I’m sure the vendors are working late into the night to get ready for everyone tomorrow.

I will be updating through out the day, and in the evening after the day has come to a close.  Check my Facebook and Twitter for updates.

On Friday Carrie Fisher suffered a heart attack on a flight from London to Los Angeles.  Details of the events on the plane are slowly emerging, even a week later.  What we do know for sure is that Carrie passed away on Tuesday, December 27,  Heartbroken by the loss, her mother legendary actress Debbie Reynolds also passed away.

Debbie Reynolds was in many films throughout her career, most famously “Singing in the Rain” at the age of 19.  The same age that Carrie became our princess.
