Wonder Con: Thoughts

This year’s Wonder Con was in Los Angeles California this year.  A stark difference from its cozy home in the Anaheim Convention Center.

I have gone to multiple conventions from San Diego Comic Con, E3, Comikaze, and of course Wonder Con.

Aside from feeling as though they let way too many people in, I generally enjoy myself at conventions.  However Wonder Con 2016 seemed out of sorts this year, and location should not make  a difference when it’s run by the same people who run Comic Con.

The line manager was completely out of line when they first started to let people into the show.  From trying to keep hundreds of people in a single line to physically holding people back from moving forward. Yes, I mean, hands to shoulders and holding someone back.  Not exactly how you’d want to start your day.

This year Wonder Con also introduced a RFID tap in tap out badge system.  Clever right?  Wrong.  It was nothing short of a hassle.  It could be working one minute and beeping red the next.  When that happens you have to go to the help desks (yet another few long lines) and prove your identity by showing your ID.  It is a waste of time.

Once you get in the convention resembles most conventions as we know them.

Wonder Con 2016, LA or Bust

UnknownWonder Con begins this weekend, March 25-27.  It is usually held in Anaheim CA, but has now made the move to the Los Angeles Convention center.  I’m not sure how I feel about this move, but I do know that other events that take place here do very well, such as E3 and Comikaze.  It’s a much bigger venue than the Anaheim convention center.

So far the ease of buying tickets and even being able to purchase a parking ticket for all three days seems too good to be true.  This should be a smooth convention if things go right.

I do know that they will be using a new RFID wrist band to allow people in and out access.  I am curious as to how this is going to work and how effective it will really be against sharing and people entering for free with other’s badges.  Will this count the number of people inside and maybe give the volunteers some information as to how to control the crowd?

I am very excited to attend Wonder Con this year in LA.  I think it will make the convention better in so many ways.  First it’s bigger, and more vendors and artists can show off their hard work.  Two the location is great, I’ve always liked the LA Live area.  There’s plenty of restaurants that aren’t in hotels.  And it’s closer to my house.

I’m hoping for organization and a good time.  Thats all I want, thats all anyone wants.  Make sure you bring your backpack and stay hydrated.  You’ll thank me.  No-one wants to get out of line due to being thirsty.  And if you do decide to buy something, you’ll want to have a bag handy to put your shiny new goods in.

Have fun everyone!  I’ll be periodically updating this weekend.
